Entry #8 - Glocalization

Fast-food culture has grown significantly in the United States over the last several decades. There isn't a corner you could drive by without at least one fast-food restaurant in the lot, most of the time. Not only has this industry grown in the United States, but also other countries. McDonald's, one of the most well-known fast-food chains, has grown worldwide with over 41,000 locations across the globe. You could travel all the way to Paris and have a Big Mac under the Eiffel tower. How has McDonald's and other fast-food chains been able to branch out to other countries? Glocalization, a process in which companies adapt to local demands while also operating worldwide. McDonald's has done this by adding menu items to locations in other countries that are special to their area. Items such as the Teriyaki Chicken Filet-O in Japan, Century Egg Chicken Porridge in China, and Spicy Buffalo Chicken Poutine fries in Canada. Companies aren't trying to force American style food onto the people of other countries but rather make it more familiar by adding dishes that appeal to their taste. By doing this the company can show everyone that they understand the desire of their customer base. Bringing together Western eating styles with those of other cultures has brought the cuisines and culture together.
